Why become a Scuba diver? As we move into the 21st century, the planet earth on which we live becomes more and more populated. With the increasing demand on our land-based resources, the need to branch out into new frontiers becomes greater and greater. The frontiers that we have left are outer space and the underwater world. Neither is conducive to human existence. They both lack the air in which we need to breathe. They are however, the places we are going to be turning to feed and house our growing population in the 21st century. The galaxy is a vast place that is expensive to explore. The oceans are a little closer to home. Covering two thirds of the planet, the oceans are home to millions of plants and animals. Research in the underwater environment for food and natural resources will be a growing concern in the coming years. One way to observe the underwater world first hand is through scuba diving. Scuba divers get a birds eye view on how man is impacting the underwater environment. Divers are able to study, work, and relax in the complex underwater world. Divers can be the first line of defense against mismanagement and abuse of underwater resources. Recreational scuba diving is as affordable as any other leisure time activity. It teaches people how to interact with the underwater world safely and enjoyably. It reduces stress by putting you inside the biggest aquariums in the world. It can be used as a stepping stone to careers in oceanography, marine biology, law enforcement, limnology, recreational management, structural engineering, and underwater photography, just to name a few. The biggest reason to become a scuba diver is that it is FUN! Every dive is an adventure. You can discover large things from whale sharks and dolphins in the oceans, to sunken boats and lost anchors in local lakes. You can watch a grouper get his teeth cleaned by cleaner shrimp, or find out where the fish really are in your lake. With an underwater camera you can prove to your friends that you really did see that whopper under water, or show your insurance adjuster that your automobile really did go for a swim. Scuba diving is a social activity. Friendships formed between diving buddies can last a lifetime. Scuba divers are fun loving people. They always have something to talk about. Meeting new people through dive clubs, and at scuba vacation spots is easy. You all have something in common. You are all SCUBA DIVERS! by DES |
